Thomas Stearns Eliot (talaffuzi: Tomas Stens Eliot; 1888-yil 26-sentyabr, Amerika, Missouri1965-yil 4-yanvar, Angliya, London) — shoir, esseist, dramaturg, noshir, adabiy tanqidchi, muharrir[2]. XX asrning taniqli shoiri, ingliz modernizm sheʼriyatining namoyondasi. Eliot ijodida soʻzni mahorat bilan ishlatishda tildan unumli foydalana olishi, yozish uslubi, sheʼriyatining oʻziga xos tuzilishi bilan inliz adabiyotida oʻz oʻrniga ega boʻlgan. U shuningdek, tanqidiy esselar toʻplami orqali eskirgan eʼtiqodlar oʻrniga yangilarini oʻrnatgan[3].

Eliot Missouri shtatining Saint Louis shahrida, taniqli Boston Brahmin oilasida tugʻilgan. 1914-yil 25 yoshida Angliyaga koʻchib oʻtib, oʻsha yerda hayotini davom ettirgan[4]. U 1927-yil 39 yoshida Amerika fuqaroligidan voz kechib Britaniya fuqaroligini olgan[5].

Eliot ilk marta 1914 — 1915-yillarda eʼlon qilingan „The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock“ sheʼri bilan koʻpchilikning eʼtiborini qozongan. Ushbu sheʼr boshida baʼzilar tomonidan gʻalati deb tan olingan[6]. Undan soʻng, „The Waste Land“ (1922), „The Hollow Men“ (1925), „Ash Wednesday“ (1930) va „Four Quartets“ (1943) kabi sheʼrlari oʻquvchilarga taqdim qilingan[7]. Uni mashhur qilgan asarlari „Murder in the Cathedral“, „The Cocktail Party“ va bulardan tashqari beshta pyesasi boʻldi. Eliot 1948-yilda oʻz zamonasi sheʼriyatiga qoʻshgan hissasi uchun Adabiyot boʻyicha Nobel mukofotiga sazovor boʻlgan[8][9][10].

Hayoti[tahrir | manbasini tahrirlash]

Eliotlarning kelib chiqishi Boston Brahmin oilasiga borib taqaladi. Bu oila vakillari asosan Angliya va Amerikaning Yangi Angliya shahrida ildiz otgan. Eliotninɡ bobosi William Greenleaf Eliot Missourining Saint Louis shahriga koʻchib oʻtgan[7][11]. U yerda Xristian Unitarian ibodatxonasini tashkil qilgan. Uning otasi Henry Ware Eliot (1843–1919) yaxshi tijoratchi boʻlishi bilan birga Saint Louis shahridagi „Hydraulic-Press Brick“ kompaniyasining prezidenti va gʻaznachisi edi. Onasi Charlotte Champe Stearns (1843–1929) sheʼrlar yozgan, bundan tashqari XX asr boshlarida Qoʻshma Shtatlarda yangi kasb boʻlgan jamoat ishchisi vazifasida ishlagan. Ota-onasi Eliotdan oldin beshta farzand koʻrishadi, lekin ular hayotdan erta koʻz yumishadi. Oltinchi boʻlib Eliot tugʻilgan va unga ona tomondan bobosi Thomas Stearnsning ismini qoʻyishgan. Oilasi va doʻstlari uni Tom deb atashgan.

Eliotning bolalik davridan adabiyotga boʻlgan qiziqishiga bir qancha omillar sabab boʻlgan. Birinchidan, u bolaligida jismoniy qiyinchiliklarni yengib oʻtishga majbur boʻlgan. Juft chov-yorgʻoq churrasi kasalligi bilan kurashganligi bois, jismoniy mashqlar bilan shugʻullana olmagan. Ushbu tugʻma kasallik Eliotning tengdoshlari bilan muloqot qilishiga toʻsqinlik qilgan. Koʻpincha yolgʻiz yuradigan Eliotda adabiyotga qiziqish ortib borgan. Savodi chiqqach, shavqatsiz hayot, Gʻarb yovvoyi tabiati haqidagi ertaklarni, ayniqsa Mark Twainning Tom Sawyerning yangi sarguzashtlari romanini oʻqishni sevgan[12].

Doʻsti Robert Sencourt Eliot haqidagi xotiralaridan birini eslab shunday deydi. „Yosh Eliot deraza yonida oʻtirib, tashqaridagi hayotni oʻzi oʻqigan ertaklaridagidek tasavvur qilar, hayot ogʻriqlariga qarshi orzusidagi dorini oʻylab topish haqida oʻylardi“[13].
