MArkaziy Africa is a core region of the African continent often considered to include:
O'rta Africa (as used by the United Nations when categorising geographic subregions) is an analogous term that describes the portion of Africa south of the Sahara Desert, east of Western Africa, but west of the Great Rift Valley. The region is dominated by the Congo River and its tributaries, which collectively drain a greater area than any river system except the Amazon. According to the UN, the nine countries of Middle Africa are:
- Angola
- Cameroon
- Central African Republic
- Chad
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Gabon
- São Tomé and Príncipe

East Africa or Eastern Africa is the easternmost region of the African continent, variably defined by geography or geopolitics. In the UN scheme of geographic regions, 19 territories comprise Eastern Africa:
- Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda – also members of the East African Community (EAC)
- Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia – often reckoned as the Horn of Africa
- Mozambik and Madagascar – sometimes considered part of Southern Africa
- Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – sometimes included in Southern Africa and formerly of the Central African Federation
- Burundi and Rwanda – sometimes considered part of Central Africa
- Comoros, Mauritius, and Seychelles – small island nations in the Indian Ocean
- Réunion and Mayotte – French overseas territories also in the Indian Ocean

In the UN scheme of geographic regions, five countries comprise Southern Africa:

- Angola – also included in Central Africa

- Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – sometimes included in Southern Africa and formerly of the Central African Federation
- Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Mayotte, and Réunion – small island territories in the Indian Ocean east of the African mainland
The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania, though more commonly reckoned in Central and Eastern Africa respectively, are occasionally included in Southern Africa. Apropos, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was established in 1980 to facilitate co-operation in the region, which includes all of the above except Comoros (totalling 15 members).
The Southern African Customs Union (SACU), created in 1969, comprises the five countries in the UN subregion of Southern Africa.
