Sylvester Hovard Roper (1823-yil 24-noyabr – 1896-yil 1-iyun)[1][2] amerikalik ixtirochi. U Massachusetts shtatining Boston shahrida ilk avtomobillar va mototsikllarning dastlabki koʻrinishlarini yaratgan. 1863-yilda u eng birinchi avtomobillardan biri boʻlgan bugʻ mashinasi yasagan[3][4][5][6][7]. 1867–1869 yillardagi Roperning bugʻda ishlaydigan mototsikli birinchi mototsikllardan biri boʻlishi mumkin[8][9][10][11][12] buning uchun u 2002-yilda Mototsikllar shon-shuhrat zaliga kiritilgan[13]. U, shuningdek ikki ogʻizli ov miltigʻining ixtirochisi hisoblanadi[14][15][16].

Sylvester H.Roperning otasi Merrick duradgor boʻlgan, 1792-yilda Massachusetts shtatining Sterling shahrida tugʻilgan[17]. Merrick 1807-yilda New Hempshire shtatining Francestown shahriga kelgan va 1817-yilda Sylvesterning onasi Susan Fairbanksga uylangan[18]. Sylvesterning katta akasi boʻyoqchi boʻlib ishlagan, ukasi esa Bostondagi Singer tikuv mashinalari fabrikasida mashinist sifatida ishlagan[1].

Sylvester Roper 1823-yil 24-noyabrda tugʻilgan[1][2]. Yoshligidan u mexanik boʻlishga juda qiziqgan. 12 yoshida hech kimning yordamisiz bugʻ mashinasini yasagan. Bu ixtiro hozirda Francestown muzeyi koʻrgazmalar zalida saqlanadi. Roper Francestownni yoshligida tark etgan va dastlab Nashuada, keyin Manchester, New-York va Worcesterda mashinist boʻlib ishlagan. U 1845-yil 20-aprelda Rhode Islandning Providence shahrida Almira D. Hillga uylangan. 1854-yilda u Bostonga, Massachusets shtatiga koʻchib oʻtgan.

Taxminan u Bostonga kelganida, Roper oʻzining Handstitch tikuv mashinasini ixtiro qilgan. 1861-yilda u dvigatelini ixtiro qilgan va dvigatellari uchun bir nechta patentlar olgan. Sylvesterning dvigatel ustida tinimsiz ishlashi natijasida u 1 dan 4 ot kuchiga ega boʻlgan dvigatelni muvaffaqiyatli yaratgan. Roper fuqarolik urushi davrida Springfild qurol-yarogʻ omborida ishlagan. Roperning ishi oxir-oqibat mintaqaning boshqa ixtirochi va muhandislari, jumladan Elias Howe, Alvan Clark, Christopher Miner Spencerning eʼtiboriga tushgan. U 1896-yil 1-iyun kuni Cambridge shahrida mototsikl halokatidan vafot etgan.
