In 2008, Ashford released her first solo album, There, But for You, Go I, via the Parisian label Waterhouse Records.[21] In June 2012, she released her first record with her band Prairie Empire. Ashford recorded Prairie Empire (Trailer Fire Records) in Portland, Oregon, with support from members of the band Harlowe.[16] Leslie Ventura of Las Vegas Weekly notes the „sheer emotive power of her voice“,[22] while Daytrotter praised the transportive capacity of the album’s lyrics.[18] Ashford has been praised for the unique and distinctive qualities of her voice, with one critic saying, „Her voice is tender, but also strong and determined…the threatened vulnerability was serenely vanquished.“[23]

In July 2016, Ashford released The Salt, her sophomore album with Prairie Empire, via Commodore Trotter Records. Ashford, who provided vocals, guitar and arrangements for the album was joined on drums by bandmate Nim Ben-Reuven, as well as Brent Arnold (cello), Jeff Hudgins (clarinet, sax, baritone sax), Danah Olivetree (cello), Alec Spiegelman (pump organ), Scott Colberg (guitar) and Matt Bauer (vocals).[20] Additionally, the band was joined on tour by Jacki Paolella, who helped to produce The Salt at TAPTAP Records in Norfolk, Virginia. In a review for Veer Magazine, Shannon Jay said The Salt „embodies a delicate toughness“, calling attention to Ashford’s vocals, the „ambient complexity“ of the arrangements and the album’s powerful storytelling.[24]

Ashford has also released five non-album singles under her own name: „Good for Goodness“, „Time Takes Time“, „Please Leave a Light on When You Go“ (featuring Great Comet writer Dave Malloy, „Bells, Boxes“, and „For the First Time“.[25] In December 2018, she released a four-song EP with songwriting collaborator Matt Bauer.

On February 18, 2019, Ashford announced an Indiegogo campaign to fund her second solo studio album, entitled Drama Club. The album was released on September 24, 2019. The album features covers of musical theatre songs „run through a David Lynch filter“, including a new version of „Sonya Alone“ from Great Comet. The first single from the album, a cover of „You're the One That I Want“ from Grease, was released on March 15, 2019.[26] A second single, a cover of her aria from Great Comet, „Sonya Alone“, was released on July 16, 2019.

Ashford’s third solo album, „Trotter“, came out on May 19, 2023.[27]

Andersonʼs first solo recording contract was with Virgin Records' Circa label. The initial marketing release was the EP Dusky Sappho in 1993.[28] The freshman album True Spirit, released in 1994, had pop chart success with single releases „Mama Said“, „Let It Last“ and „Nervous Breakdown“.[28]

Andersonʼs 1998 second solo album, Blessed Burden, gained commercial recognition with singles „Woman in Me“ and a cover of Paul McCartney’s „Maybe I’m Amazed“.[28]

Albertaʼs Granddaughter was Andersonʼs first independent and third solo album, released in 2002 on her own label, Dusky Sappho. This work included a cover of Noel Gallagher’s „Donʼt Look Back in Anger“.

Andersonʼs fourth solo album, Grace and Favours, was recorded live at the Glee Club in Birmingham, England. It was released in 2003 by Orange Room Music on CD and DVD formats with clips that include interviews and impromptu performances with James Brown and Paul Weller.

Universal Records released her fifth solo offering, Up to Now, in 2004. It was a compilation of songs over her career up to that date.

Her sixth album, Soul Providence, was released on Dome Records in 2005. It featured her song „My Door is Open“, which was remixed by Richard Earnshaw in 2010 as a dance floor production and was featured on Earnshaw’s album, In Time.[29]

From 2002 to 2007 Anderson taught and was Head of the Vocal Department at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). She had a bi-annual residency at Ronnie Scottʼs Jazz Club in Soho, performing to packed audiences from 2006 to 2015. She sang a varied repertoire of jazz classics, musical theatre and unreleased material, as well as her commercial hits. In March 2007, in celebration of International Womenʼs Day, Anderson had the honour of singing for Her Majesty The Queen.

In 2014 Arts Council England awarded Anderson a grant to produce her Tribal Opera Cage Street Memorial. In 2015 she also received a grant from PRS Women Make Music to record her compositions from Cage Street Memorial, released as her seventh album on Freestyle Records in 2016. A Barbican Theatre stage production of the album in 2018 earned her a JazzFM Innovation of the Year nomination.[30]

In 2019 Anderson became an Associate Artist at Hall for Cornwall in Truro. She was Choir Director for the BBC Singers and UK Vocal Assembly at the Royal Albert Hall for the August 2019 „Sacred Music“ tribute to Duke Ellington at the BBC Proms and contributed to the performance as vocal arranger and curator. In June 2020 Anderson composed the music and was the featured vocalist and narrator for the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Harlem Renaissance author Jean Toomer’s Cane, Drama of the Week in the BBC Sounds Electric Decade series.
