Taʼrif
Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley martyred by being burnt at the stake. John Foxe's book of martyrs. 1563 edition. When looking at these images which portray ideas such as martyrdom it is always interesting to know how historical the depiction is, in this case less than ten years after the event. An X marks the spot in Broad St. Oxford where they were burnt when it was the Town Ditch outside the walls. St Michael at the Northgate is now hidden behind a row of houses and it is in this Saxon Tower (http://www.smng.org.uk/) that the two martyrs were imprisoned before being burnt. You will notice a Saxon tower (their prison) in the background of the print. Oxford City Museum shows a barbican at this point in the walls in a map of 1578. So by and large this seems to show it like it was.
