al position at the confluenceof the Jumna with the Ganges. The spot from time im-memorial has been one of the most sacred places of pilgrimageand known to Hindus as Prayag or Payag. It does notappear to have been fortified.^ In October 1583 Akbartravelled from Agra to the confluence, proceeding most ofthe w^ay by river. He began the building of the fort, whichstill exists, in November; and, in accordance with hisregular practice, hurried on the work so that it was com-pleted in a remarkably short time. A great city, the modernAllahabad, grew up in the neighbourhood of the fortress.^The rapidity of Akbars building operations much impressed ^ A.N., iii, 616. = A.N., ii, 499. ^ Jhusi, on the opposite side ofthe Ganges, seems to have beenthe old Hindu fortress. It wasimportant in the fourth and fifthcenturies a.c. * Ilahabas is the Hindu formof the name, and still in commonuse. Some A\Titers assert thatAkbar gave that name, but it ismore probable that he employedthe Persian form Ilahabad.
