Object history
Deutsch: Die Burg Rieneck wird erstmals 1179 urkundlich genannt. Sie war bis zur Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts das politische und wirtschaftliche Zentrum der Grafen von Rieneck. Die Ansiedlung unterhalb der Burg wurde um 1250 zur Stadt erhoben. Als das Grafengeschlecht 1559 ausgestorben ist, teilten sich der Kurstaat Mainz, der seit 1366 bereits die Landeshoheit innehatte, und die Grafen von Hanau die Herrschaft Rieneck. Ortssiegel sind erst seit dem 19. Jahrhundert überliefert. Eine amtliche Bestätigung des Wappens ist nicht bekannt. Im Wappen stehen die Wappenbilder der wichtigsten Herrschaftsinhaber. Die neunmalige Teilung von Gold und Rot ist das Wappen der Grafen von Rieneck, die sparrenförmige Teilung ist dem Wappen der Grafen von Hanau entnommen. Das sechsspeichige silberne Rad ist die Wappenfigur des Kurstaates Mainz. Seit 1898 sind die Farben des Wappens im Schrifttum belegt.
