Notes The Kröller-Müller Museum renamed this important drawing Les Racines in accordance with van Gogh's own account of the work in Letter 222. In that letter he remarked that in this drawing, and another drawing, a larger version (now lost) of Sorrow (F929a) he had finished at the same time, he was trying to express something of life's struggles. Both drawings are masterworks of draftsmanship.
