Deutsch: Der silberne Balken redet als Wegsymbol für den ersten Teil des Ortsnamens. Kirche, Taube mit Scheit, Weg und Bäume beziehen sich auf die Legende von der Kirche im Wald: Als weiter nördlich im Wald eine Kirche errichtet werden sollte, habe eine Taube ein blutiges Holzscheit von der Baustelle zu einem anderen Platz getragen. Dies sei als Fingerzeig Gottes verstanden und der Kirchenbau an der von der Taube bezeichneten Stelle vorgenommen worden. So sei Wegscheid, abgeleitet von Scheit am Weg, entstanden. Tatsächlich ist der Name von Wegscheide, der Gabelung der Straßen nach Südböhmen und ins österreichische Mühlviertel, abzuleiten. Wegscheid gehörte bis zur Säkularisation 1803 zum Fürstbistum Passau und führte im 18. Jahrhundert ein Siegel mit dem von Palmzweigen umgebenen Passauer Wolf. Um 1800 wurde ohne Nachweis einer Verleihung ein Siegel mit dem noch heute geführten Marktwappen angefertigt. Spätere Abbildungen zeigen außerdem oben ein Osterlamm und seitlich den Passauer Wolf und einen Adler (wohl für Österreich). Dieses Beiwerk wurde in der Bürgermeistermedaille des 19. Jahrhunderts und in den neueren Dienstsiegeln weggelassen.
