Das Wappen zeigt in Blau über blauem Wasser eine sich erhebende goldene Burg mit geschlossenem roten Tor. Auf der Burgmauer stehen zwei sich verjüngende Türme; in ihrer Mitte ein von Rot, Silber und Schwarz geteilter und halbgespaltener Schild.

Das Wappen in der heutigen Form stammt aus dem Jahr 1901. Das früheste nachweisbare Siegel der Stadt stammt aus dem 16. Jh. und zeigt nur den in der Mitte des Wappens befindlichen Schild. Er ist das Wappen der Herren von Gersdorf, die vom 14. bis ins 19. Jh. nahezu durchgängig die Grundherren der Stadt waren.
