Object history
Deutsch: Weißenburg ist einstiger Königshof, die Stadterhebung erfolgte im 13. Jahrhundert. Weißenburg war Verwaltungsmittelpunkt für die königlichen Güter der Umgebung und Sitz der Reichspflege. Aus dem Jahr 1241 ist der Abdruck eines Siegels überliefert mit der Umschrift SIGILL CIVITATIS WIZZENBVRGENSIS und einem gespaltenen Schild, darin rechts am Spalt der halbe Reichsadler, links eine Burg mit halbem Turm am Spalt und ein Mauerstück. Das gleiche Bild findet sich auf einem Sekret von 1476. Parallel zum Hauptsiegel ist seit gleicher Zeit das Siegel des Maiers im Gebrauch mit einer Burg und einem schwebenden, links gewendeten Adler. Kaiser Friedrich III. verlieh der Stadt 1481 das Wappen in seiner heutigen Gestalt. Von 1808 bis 1835 stand im kleinen Schild anstelle des Adlers der Großbuchstabe W. In den Siegeln findet sich bis 1967 ein Engel als Schildhalter.
