Deutsch: Die Formulierung de Hauptsatzung ist wie folgt:„Das Wappen der Stadt ist ein schwarz umrandetes grünes Schild, das in der Mitte einen aufrechtstehenden, aus Sicht der Betrachtenden nach links blickenden goldenen Löwen mit roten Krallen, roter Zunge und rotem Auge zeigt. Über dem Schild befindet sich eine dreitürmige steinfarbene in rot dargestellte Mauerkrone.“ Die heraldisch korrekte Blasonierung muss heißen:„In Grün ein rotbewehrter goldener Löwe; im Oberwappen eine zinnenbewehrte dreitürmige rote Mauerkrone.“

Deutsch: Das Wappen ist abgeleitet von einem Siegel aus dem Jahre 1318. Der : Löwe steht für die früheren Landesherren der Fürsten von Lüneburg. Die Mauerkrone steht für die Stadt als solche; die Stadtrechte wurden Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts verliehen.
English: The arms is derived from a seal of 1318. They show the lion of Lüneburg to which the town belonged till 1705. The mural crown symbolises the town as such.
