Taʼrif
English: The screene of fortune here behold which will informe both young & old. In all you desire to know. If you but burne the wheel below. Unto some letter there you'l see what tis the starrs for you decree of good. Anonymous, printed in Great Britain between 1650 and 1750. A fortune-telling game, in the collection of the British Library, E2:4[240].

Across the top of the circle, the following "Clouds" appear:

26 Satirs go to Wanton Phillis
33 Hobgoblins go to Gallant Palidor
23 Nymphs go to Blind Cupid
24 Conjurors go to Faire Rosamond
25 Nyades go to Ravished Europa

39 Rob Goodfellow go to Deceitefull Dalila
31 Rosy Crucians go to Topeing Baccus
29 Poets go to Constant Thisby
38 Toms of Bedlam go to Chast Diana

Under the "Clouds", this text appears as a general instruction:

The Use of the SCREENE as to Passe-time by way of Example

Suppose your Quest: is Whether long Liv'd, at the end of it, you read Fire, looke for the Circle of Fire, then turne the Screene, & Suppose ye handle has ye Crosse on ye right Side of it; Looke for ye Crosse in ye Circle, & over it you Will find ye Number 31. Looke for ye same Number in ye Clouds, under it you Will find ye Rosy-Crucians, which sends you to Topeing Bacchus. Looke for him at ye top of the Tables of answers, & ye line which has ye Crosse before it, is your answer And so of ye Questions & Letters, all along.

Below that, a large oval reads:

The Screene of Fortune here behold
Which will inform both young and old
In all you desire to know
If you but turn the Wheel below
Unto some letter there you’ll see
What tis the Stars for you decree
Of good or ill what pleases Fate
On your thoughts to deliberate

Reading clockwise on a level with the oval, you will see a series of smaller "Circles" each of which contains a ring of numbers, a ring of letters and a number and name in the center:

20 Calliope
19 Urania
18 Polymnia
17 Erato
16 Terpsichore
15 Melpomene
14 Thalia
13 Euterpe
12 Clio
11 Fire

At the very center is a wheel of letters: + B C D F G H K L M N P Q R S T W X Y Z

Around the outside on a level with the "Clouds" are the "Tables of Answers", segments containing a list of responses. Each segment is headed with a name from the initial set of boxes: e.g. "Wanton Phillis", and contains a set of numbered questions, identified with the letters shown above.
