Butunjahon atrof-muhit kuni — har yili 5-iyun kuni nishonlanadi va Birlashgan Millatlar Tashkilotining atrof-muhitni muhofaza qilish bo'yicha xabardorlikni va harakatni rag'batlantirishning asosiy vositasi hisoblanadi. Birinchi marta 1973-yilda o'tkazilgan. U dengiz ifloslanishi, aholining haddan tashqari ko'payishi, global isish, barqaror rivojlanish va yovvoyi tabiat jinoyatlari kabi atrof-muhit muammolari haqida xabardorlikni oshirish uchun platforma bo'ldi. Butunjahon atrof-muhitni muhofaza qilish kuni har yili 143 dan ortiq mamlakatlar ishtirokida jamoatchilikni targ'ib qilish uchun global platformadir. Har yili dastur biznes, nodavlat tashkilotlar, jamoalar, hukumatlar va taniqli shaxslar uchun atrof-muhit sabablarini himoya qilish uchun mavzu va forum taqdim etadi. Birlashgan Millatlar Tashkiloti Bosh Assambleyasining 27-sessiyasida 1972-yil 15-dekabrda e'lon qilingan. 1972-yil 5-iyun inson muhiti bo'yicha Stokgolm konferentsiyasining boshlanishi sanasi sifatida tanlandi. Bosh Assambleya o‘z rezolyutsiyasida BMT tizimidagi davlatlar va tashkilotlarni har yili shu kuni atrof-muhitni asrash va yaxshilashga intilishlarini tasdiqlovchi tadbirlar o‘tkazishga chaqiradi. Shuningdek, Bosh Assambleyaning 27-sessiyasida BMT tizimidagi yangi tashkilot – Birlashgan Millatlar Tashkilotining Atrof-muhit bo‘yicha dasturi (YUNEP) tuzildi. YUNEP homiyligida har yili Butunjahon atrof-muhit kuni nishonlanadi.
