Object history Die recht junge, erst seit 1697 aufblühende und 1763 zur Stadt erhobene Ansiedlung Pirmasens erhielt zur Stadtwerdung ok ein Siegel mit einer malerischen Stadtansicht; auf einem von Vögeln umflatterten (Kirch.)turm steht auf Blitzen ein schwertschwingender Löwe, wohl mehr Symbol der Tapferkeit für die Soldatensiedlung Pirmasens als Wappentier der hanaulichtenbergischen Landesherren (vgl. Abguß eines Siegels in Privatbesitz, LA Speyer, Y 10 Nr. 321). Gegen Einwände des Reichsherolds entschied König Ludwig I. zugunsten dieses Siegels in der Form der Abbildung im Theatinergang in München. Dort wurde - wohl in der künstlerischen Freiheit des Malers - ein Stadttor mit drei Türmen abgebildet. Dieses ästhetisch nicht völlig befriedigende Wappen erfuhr zahlreiche Änderungen und war noch in den 60er Jahren umstritten, eine offizielle Wappenänderung wurde nicht vorgenommen. Die Rückkehr zum Pirmasenser Gerichtssiegel von 1583 mit Hanauer Sparren und Kanne in geteiltem Schild (LA Speyer, C 19 Nr. 233) wurde zwar diskutiert, aber nicht realisiert.
